Sometimes two parties recognize that they will be unable to come to an agreement themselves, even with the assistance of a mediator.  In this instance, they have two options:  go to litigation in the court system or seek the services of an arbitrator.  The court system is likely to be an expensive and time-consuming process.  Arbitration, by contrast, is a cost- and time-effective solution.  The arbitrator listens to both sides impartially and then comes to a decision that is binding on both parties.
